Maria's
Story

Artist Statement

I’m a mixed media artist exploring nature, memory, and meaning through textured layers, expressive realism, and hand-drawn mark-making.

My work weaves together florals, nature, and whimsy with vintage and antique elements—pieces that feel like they’ve lived a life before reaching my hands. I’m often drawn to small, meaningful objects like grandma’s china, worn books, old papers, and inherited keepsakes. These fragments carry stories. They remind me what it feels like to be loved, safe, and seen, and how those experiences shape the way we see and move through the world.

At the heart of my work is a quiet but powerful thread: reclaiming voice. I’m interested in the space between silence and expression. Through layered materials and intuitive mark-making, I create work that transforms what was once hushed into something visible, felt, and shared.

Art journals and sketchbooks are central to my practice. They’re where I discover, play, and grow. Through line, space, texture, collage, and layered process, I gather memories and materials—sometimes messy, sometimes delicate, but always honest. These pages become the foundation for my larger mixed media works, balancing representational abstraction, structure and freedom.

Guided by a search for meaning and a belief in renewal, I create thoughtfully and reflectively. I’m drawn to the quiet truth that beauty often lives in the in-between—in what is worn, remembered, and restored.

My hope is that my art offers warmth and stillness, while also creating space—for voice, for truth, for belonging. A place to dream, to remember, and to reconnect with joy, imagination, and the freedom to be fully seen.

5 Things About Me

I love a lot. I love my family. We are all imperfect people who get to do life together. I love them just the way they are and I intentionally tell them often, or at least I try to. I love people, we can learn a lot from each other. Everyone is welcome here.

I've seen some things. I have moved eleven times since college including moves to Germany, Hawaii, Kentucky, and all over Indiana. Moves in good and hard times. Moves that shaped me and made me do hard things. Moves that have expanded my understanding of others.

I love to learn. I try things. A lot of things. I fail and get back up. I learn and grow. It's never about perfection over here, but I do my best.

I am strong & determined. Not my words, but what I have been told that is who I am. You know those people who are watching you when you don't think anyone is watching. My faith keeps me rooted, prayer gets me through, and God gets the glory.

My imagination is my superpower. As a child I was loud, very imaginative, and enjoyed being creative. Somewhere along the journey, I believed this wasn't a good thing. I am learning to use my imagination through my artwork. This is a work in progress. Stick around to see more.
